Scratchboard or "scraperboard" is a paper or board surface that is finely and uniformly layered with clay (usually white) and then coated with dense black India ink. The technique is simple - using a blade or stylus scratch into the top layer removing the black and exposing the white underlayer. This technique is well suited for fine detail work and is favoured by many wildlife artists.
Scratch knives are the preferred tools for traditional scratchboard art. Made from high carbon steel, they're heat-treated to retain sharpness and plated to resist rust. Scratch tools are designed for sgrafitto techniques to produce lines and create terrific textures. Fits into most standard penholders.
