Soapstone is a well known stone used by Inuit sculptors for its soft grain. It is free from impurities and therefore easy to carve with x-acto knives, rasps or traditional stone carving tools. The stone's smooth finish is achieved by burnishing the surface with "wet or dry" sandpaper then buffing with linseed oil. This grey soapstone turns dark grey to black when oiled or varnished. Asbestos free. Mined from a quarry located in southern Quebec.
